How to Catch a Loose Chinchilla: Luring Techniques

If your chinchilla escapes and you know the specific room, the first step is to secure all doors and windows. Remove any items that could offer hiding spots. This will make it easier to locate and catch your chinchilla. You can also use treats and their dust bath to entice them out.

Typically, a scared chinchilla, especially after escaping, will try to adapt in a small, safe corner of the room it escaped in. Therefore, most times when you discover the escape, it will still be within the room. Once you know the room your chinchilla is in, close all the doors and windows securely, and seal any other possible escape routes. In this secured space, remove all loose items such as furniture (stools, coffee tables, chairs), small appliances, and any other clutter. Keep only the large furniture and appliances in the room, making everything visible. This eliminates most hiding places, making it easier to spot the chinchilla.

Use your chinchilla's favorite treats placed on the floor or in your hand to lure them out of their hiding spot. As they enjoy the treat, you can attempt to catch them. Alternatively, place their dust bath on the floor, ensuring you’re not too far away. Wait for your chinchilla to hop into the dust bath. Once they're in, quickly block the entrance to the dust bath (or place the lid on it), and transfer the chinchilla and the dust bath back into its cage.Related resource:Pet Training
