Shaving your dog's fur in the summer does not effectively cool them down. Dogs primarily regulate their body temperature through panting, using their tongue, ears, paws, and paw pads, rather than through their skin. Therefore, shaving provides no cooling benefit for them. Furthermore, shaving a dog can expose their skin, increasing the risk of sunburn, heatstroke, and other skin-related issues. It's generally best to avoid shaving your dog unnecessarily to prevent these health problems.

Dogs have different cooling mechanisms than humans. They primarily cool down through exocrine sweat glands, which are located in their paws, and through panting. When dogs pant, the evaporation of saliva from their tongue helps to lower their body temperature. Shaving a dog may give the appearance of cooling, but it offers no actual benefit for the dog's thermoregulation. Instead, short shaves can lead to sunburn and can also make their fur feel coarse and rough as it grows back. Shaving should generally only be considered if your dog has a skin condition that requires it, such as to apply medication to affected areas and promote healing. When shaving, always follow the direction of hair growth to avoid injuring the dog's skin. After shaving, the dog's coat no longer offers the same level of protection, so you should take extra precautions, especially when taking your dog outdoors. The exposed skin is vulnerable to sun damage, and the dog is less protected from heat.

How to Keep Your Dog Cool in Summer

1. Whether you're at home or taking your dog out, always make sure they have access to plenty of fresh, clean water. Hydration is key to temperature regulation.

2. When at home, keep your curtains or blinds closed to block out sunlight and keep the house cooler. When going out, try to stick to shady areas to prevent direct sunlight exposure. During extreme heat, it is best to avoid going out with your dog altogether.
