DIY Dog Deworming: A Step-by-Step Guide & How to Tell If Your Dog Needs It

For internal deworming, you can mix the deworming medication with your dog's treats; for external deworming, you'll need to part your dog's fur and apply the medication directly to their skin.

Dog deworming is generally divided into internal and external methods. Internal deworming usually involves administering granules or tablets. Some dogs are reluctant to take them directly. If your dog refuses to eat the deworming medication, you can mix it with canned food or treats, or seek assistance from a professional at a veterinary clinic. External deworming typically uses topical solutions. Gently part the fur on your dog's back to expose the skin, then apply the solution along the exposed area. External deworming medications can be toxic, so it's essential to prevent your dog from licking the treated area. Use an Elizabethan collar until the medication is fully absorbed and dry. Avoid bathing your dog for 48 hours after applying external dewormer. Use the correct dosage of deworming medication based on your dog’s weight. Always check the specifications and dosage before use.

How to Recognize When Your Dog Needs Deworming

1. Visible Parasites: You can physically see parasites on your dog, such as fleas or ticks, or notice worms in their stool. The presence of flea dirt (black specks) in your dog's fur can also be a strong indicator.

2. Typical Symptoms: Your dog may exhibit signs of discomfort, like excessive scratching, biting at their fur, or scooting their rear end on the ground. These behaviors suggest possible external or internal parasites.

3. Unexplained Health Issues: Despite a good diet and appetite, your dog might be anemic, fail to gain weight, or even lose weight. These issues can be caused by internal parasites that are stealing their nutrients.
