Guinea Pig Price Guide: How Much Do They Cost and Which Breeds Are Most Expensive?

The price of a guinea pig varies depending on its breed and location. Common short-haired guinea pigs typically cost between $15 and $50. Long-haired breeds can reach prices upwards of $100, with long smooth-haired guinea pigs being the most expensive, sometimes costing as much as $400.

Despite their name, guinea pigs are not pigs; they are also known as cavies or domestic guinea pigs. These adorable creatures are popular pets worldwide, and their cost is relatively accessible. A guinea pig's price is also related to coat color. The most common coat colors are yellow, white, and black, but there are also bi-colored varieties (yellow and white, or black and white) and solid black guinea pigs. These more common colors tend to be more affordable, generally ranging from $20 to $80, with prices slightly higher in larger cities. More unusual coat colors can push the price into the triple digits.

Furthermore, a guinea pig's breed and eye color also affect its price. Red-eyed guinea pigs tend to be cheaper than those with black eyes. This is particularly true for pure white guinea pigs; the eye color can significantly impact their price.

Guinea pigs come in long-haired, short-haired, and curly-haired varieties. Long-haired breeds are rarer than short-haired, making them more expensive. Short-haired guinea pigs generally range from $10 to $50. Smooth short-haired varieties are the most affordable, often around $20. Short rough-haired ones might cost between $30 and $50. Long-haired guinea pigs can cost hundreds of dollars, with long rough-haired guinea pigs around $150 and long smooth-haired guinea pigs fetching prices between $100 and $400 due to their exceptionally silky fur. Hairless and curly-haired guinea pigs are also expensive, going for over $300 due to their rarity and the difficulty in keeping them healthy.

Guinea Pig Care Considerations

Temperature is crucial for guinea pigs. They thrive in temperatures between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (20-24 degrees Celsius). These small animals are easily startled, so they should be kept in a quiet environment with noise levels below 50 decibels.

Guinea pigs are herbivores. Never feed them chocolate or coffee. They have delicate digestive systems that can easily develop problems. Their diet should primarily consist of hay and formulated guinea pig feed, supplemented with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure a well-rounded and nutritious diet.
