Why is My Dog Having Diarrhea?

In such cases, it is advised to fast your dog for 24 hours, ensuring they drink plenty of water. After the fasting period, start with small portions of rice porridge to ensure they regain their strength.
If diarrhea is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting, foul-smelling stools, blood in the stool, fever, and lethargy, your dog might have gastroenteritis. The best course of action is to have your dog examined by a vet. If diagnosed with gastroenteritis, follow the vet's recommendations which will likely include anti-inflammatory injections. At home, probiotics can be added to their food to assist in treating gastroenteritis and to promote a healthy gut.
If you observe diarrhea along with drowsiness, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting of mucus, or watery discharge from the eyes or nose, it's highly likely your dog has contracted canine distemper or parvovirus. These diseases can be extremely dangerous and even life-threatening for dogs.
