Do Newborn Kittens Have Fur and When Do They Open Their Eyes?

Newborn kittens are indeed born with fur, though it might not be immediately apparent. The fur is usually sparse and damp at birth, making it less noticeable. Generally, a kitten's eyes will start to open around eight days after birth. However, some kittens may open their eyes a little later, and it's still considered normal if they open within approximately two weeks.

Most newborn kittens have fur, but the fur often appears matted and less visible due to being wet. Once the mother cat grooms the kitten, its fur becomes fluffy. Newborn kittens have a developing immune system and low resistance to the elements. It is important to make sure that their bedding is warm and cushioned, and take extra care in ensuring the kittens stay warm.

When Do Kittens Open Their Eyes?

Typically, kittens will open their eyes between 8 to 15 days after birth. Even within the same litter, the timing of eye-opening can vary. It is common for kittens to open their eyes at different times, and as long as a kitten's eyes open within 15 days, it's considered within normal development. Pet owners should be patient and avoid trying to force a kitten's eyes open, as this can cause damage. A kitten's eyes might first appear as a small slit around 8 days, then they gradually adapt to light. Usually by about two weeks, the eyes are fully open. During the few days that a kitten is starting to open its eyes, do not be impatient and avoid prying at the eyelids.Learn more:Pet Grooming
