Why is My Chinese Thrush Drinking Excessively and Having Watery Stool?

Excessive water consumption and watery stool in Chinese Thrushes can often be attributed to high temperatures and humid weather. It's crucial to regulate their water intake to aid their recovery.

During hot and humid summer days, birds are prone to drinking more water, which can result in watery stool. This is especially common in Chinese Thrushes fed red meat-based diets, as it makes them thirstier. Such cases are generally not a major cause for alarm, as they are primarily due to excessive water intake. To address this issue, add a solution of one-third a bottle of Huoxiang Zhengqi liquid or crushed Artemisia (Qinghao) to their water. This can help control their water consumption, clear internal heat, and regulate their digestive system.

Maintaining Proper Cage Ventilation and Environment

It is essential not to fully enclose the birdcage. Always leave a gap for proper ventilation. Place the cage in a well-ventilated, shaded, and elevated area, or in a cool room. If you take the bird outside in the morning, remove the bottom of the cage, fully open the enclosure, and place it against a large tree. You can keep it exposed for a longer duration this way.

During summer management, let the Chinese Thrush out for play and foraging in the morning. However, avoid letting them out around midday due to intense sun exposure and heat from the ground, as this can easily cause illness and parasitic infestations. Radiant heat from the ground and evaporation increases the risk of disease and parasites.

Addressing Watery Stool Due to Infection

Another cause of watery stool is bacterial infection, which can occur due to poor air circulation within enclosed cages. Accumulated feces in the birdcage can foster bacterial growth, leading to infections that manifest as watery stool or hoarseness (a raspy, weakened voice). In such instances, begin by giving probiotics to regulate the digestive system for one week. If there is no improvement, administer one-third of a Norfloxacin capsule in their water for one and a half days, then pause medication for a day, before giving it for another day. Follow up with probiotics again for rehabilitation and recovery. For hoarseness, administer three Huangshi Xiang Sheng Pills in water for three to five days. Pigeon medication is also an option.

In summary, by carefully monitoring your Chinese Thrush's environment, water intake, and overall health, you can prevent common issues like watery stool. Proper hygiene and timely intervention are key to ensuring your bird stays happy and healthy. Remember to always provide fresh water and a balanced diet for optimal well-being.

Understanding these factors will help you identify the root cause of your Chinese thrush's condition and take appropriate action.Bonus resource:Pet Knowledge
