Bernese Mountain Dogs: Are They Large or Medium and Can You Own One in Beijing?

Bernese Mountain Dogs are classified as medium-to-large dogs. Their considerable size, high alertness, and relative difficulty in training make them unsuitable for densely populated urban environments. Consequently, owning a Bernese Mountain Dog in Beijing is not recommended due to city regulations and the dog's specific needs.

Standing at a shoulder height of approximately 58 to 70 centimeters and weighing around 40 kilograms, the Bernese Mountain Dog is undeniably a substantial breed. While known for their intelligence, stamina, gentle nature, loyalty, and trainability, Bernese Mountain Dogs require space and consistent training to thrive. They are generally considered excellent family dogs, but their size can pose challenges in urban settings.

Can You Keep a Bernese Mountain Dog in Beijing?

Unfortunately, Bernese Mountain Dogs are among the breeds prohibited in Beijing. This ban primarily stems from their significant size; adult Bernese Mountain Dogs can reach heights exceeding sixty centimeters and weigh over forty kilograms. Despite their generally amiable temperament, their sheer size can be intimidating to others. Furthermore, Bernese Mountain Dogs possess high levels of alertness and sensitivity to their surroundings, which, coupled with their training challenges, can sometimes lead to aggression towards unfamiliar people. This is why many cities have placed them on the restricted breed list. Therefore, owning a Bernese Mountain Dog in Beijing is not permissible and owners should consider breeds better suited for urban living. Remember to always check your local regulations regarding pet ownership.
