Akita Inu Sadness: Understanding Tearful Behavior

When an Akita Inu is feeling sad, it may exhibit several behavioral changes, including ignoring its owner, displaying low spirits, refusing to eat, and drooping its ears. These are clear indicators that your Akita is experiencing emotional distress.

Specifically, sadness in Akita Inus manifests as a decline in mood, reduced appetite, droopy ears, reluctance to be active, and indifference when the owner calls. It's crucial for owners to provide extra companionship during these times. Gently stroking your dog's head and back can help soothe its emotions. Using treats or toys can be an effective way to redirect its attention and prevent prolonged sadness, which could lead to physical and psychological issues. Moreover, identifying the root cause of your Akita’s sadness is essential to addressing the problem effectively. Is it boredom, loneliness, lack of exercise, or something else?

Why Is Your Akita Inu Tearing Up?

It's not uncommon for pet owners to observe their Akita Inu crying with tears. While it may look like sadness, the underlying causes are varied. Here are some of the most common reasons for watery eyes in Akita Inus:

1. **Foreign Objects in the Eye:** If your dog has something irritating in its eye, such as dirt or debris, it may produce tears, redness and show obvious discomfort. You should inspect the eye carefully for any visible irritants.

2. **Upper Respiratory Infections or Allergies:** Similar to humans, a dog’s body will naturally produce tears when it’s experiencing an upper respiratory infection, allergy or an inflammation of the eyes. There may be other symptoms, such as sneezing, nose running and excessive pawing at the eyes. In the case of allergic reactions, the vet might recommend medications to help reduce inflammation and prevent future flare ups. Sometimes, environmental factors like pollens can lead to allergic reactions in dogs.

3. **Eye Irritation and Blocked Tear Ducts:** If the tear ducts are blocked, tears might start to overflow which can cause stains on the fur around their eyes. To ensure smooth tear drainage and to prevent further issues, it’s best to check with a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis.

4. **Eyelid Problems:** Abnormalities of the eyelids like entropion (inward turning of the eyelid) or ectropion (outward turning of the eyelid) can irritate the eye and cause excessive tearing. Also, a growth in the eyelid can cause excessive tears. These conditions often require surgical correction for the dog’s comfort.

5. **Ingrown Eyelashes:** Just like in humans, ingrown eyelashes or eyelash hair growing in the wrong direction can also irritate the eyes and lead to watery eyes and discomfort. These are usually easily resolved through a simple veterinary procedure.

It is crucial to determine the underlying cause of your Akita Inu’s teary eyes and address it accordingly, as some issues require professional veterinary care. If you notice excessive tearing or eye redness, a visit to the veterinarian for a thorough checkup is highly recommended.
