What Fruits Can British Shorthair Cats Eat?

British Shorthair cats can enjoy a variety of fruits such as apples, bananas, kiwis, cantaloupe, papayas, strawberries, blueberries, and even durian. Incorporating small amounts of these fruits into your British Shorthair's diet can provide them with beneficial nutrients and vitamins, contributing to their overall health and well-being. However, it's crucial to remember that fruit should only be a treat and not a staple part of their diet.

Eight Fruits Safe for British Shorthairs

While many fruits are safe, remember moderation is key and you should introduce new fruits slowly to monitor for any adverse reactions.

1. Apples

Apples are a good source of vitamins and nutrients for British Shorthairs, but they should only be given in small amounts. Be sure to remove the core and seeds, as they contain cyanide, which is toxic to cats. Feeding the apple in small slices or pieces is the best way.

2. Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, which is beneficial for cats. They also contain dietary fiber that can aid in digestion. However, excessive banana consumption can lead to diarrhea or vomiting in British Shorthairs due to the sugar content. So, offer them banana in small quantities as a treat.

3. Kiwis

Kiwis are packed with micronutrients and vitamins that can enhance your British Shorthair's immunity. They also have diuretic and laxative properties. However, overfeeding kiwis can lead to vitamin C overdose in cats, so it’s important to give them a limited amount.

4. Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe can be a source of nutrients for your British Shorthair, but it should be offered in moderation because of its high sugar content. A small bite or two will be adequate.

5. Papaya

Papayas contain enzymes that can benefit your British Shorthair's metabolism. However, similar to other fruits, it should be given in limited quantities to prevent stomach upset.

6. Strawberries

Strawberries are rich in vitamins and minerals. Feeding a small amount of strawberries to your British Shorthair is beneficial, but as with all fruits, it should be done in moderation.

7. Blueberries

Blueberries are a superfood for humans and pets! They are high in vitamin C, which is beneficial for British Shorthairs, and also contain antioxidants that are good for their health. Offer them a few blueberries now and again for a treat.

8. Durian

Durian not only contains proteins and fats but also various vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, which can promote bowel movements. The strong smell and taste of durian might not appeal to all cats. Introduce it in tiny portions, and observe how your British Shorthair reacts to it. If they like it, it should be only an occasional treat.

Always remember, fruits should only be given as occasional treats, and should not form the main part of your British Shorthair's diet. A diet mostly consisting of high quality cat food is recommended for optimal health.Learn more:Pet Grooming
