Maltese Shedding: Peak Periods and Common Drawbacks

Maltese dogs typically experience the most significant shedding during two periods each year: March to May and September to November. This seasonal shedding is a natural process as they adapt to changing climates. As a dog's coat reaches a certain length, the hair roots detach from the follicles. These follicles then grow new hair, pushing out the old coat.

Normally, Maltese dogs will shed during these spring and fall periods. During these times, they are undergoing a coat change, resulting in increased shedding. The spring shed helps to insulate against warmer temperatures, maintaining a stable internal body temperature and preventing heatstroke. The autumn shedding produces a coat that will provide insulation and warmth during the colder winter months. Additionally, some dogs experience excessive shedding due to fungal or bacterial skin infections, poor diets, or compromised coat health. In such cases, a consultation with a veterinarian is recommended for diagnosis and treatment.

Maltese Drawbacks

Firstly, Maltese dogs are prone to excessive eye discharge. Their long facial hair contributes to tear stains. Owners should clean the eye area daily and ensure adequate water intake, while avoiding foods that can cause digestive imbalance. Secondly, the long hair around their mouths can easily become stained after meals, especially with oily foods. Owners must clean this area after each feeding. Thirdly, Maltese dogs can be prone to being aggressive and vocal. They may bark excessively, disturbing their owners or neighbors. It is always best to keep them on a leash when out and about. Finally, their dense coat requires regular grooming. Daily brushing is a must, especially during shedding seasons when the amount of fur around the house can be extreme.
