Can Dogs Get Vaccinated After Recovering from Parvo? When Are They No Longer Susceptible?

It's crucial to understand that even after a dog recovers from parvovirus, vaccination is still necessary. Although they develop antibodies after contracting parvo, this doesn't mean they are completely immune to future infections or other diseases.

After your dog has recovered from parvovirus, it's best to wait 10 to 15 days before vaccinating. This is because the treatment process might affect their immune system. Waiting allows the dog's immune system to recover, ensuring a better response to the vaccine. The vaccination schedule typically involves a series of three injections, with 21 days between each shot. Following the initial vaccination, an annual booster shot is needed to maintain immunity. If rabies vaccination is also required, an additional shot will be necessary.

It's important to avoid bathing your dog during the vaccination period to prevent impacting the vaccine's effectiveness. Also, limit their exposure to other animals and public areas for a short time after vaccination to reduce infection risks. After all vaccinations are complete, an antibody titer test is recommended to confirm that the vaccination was successful.

While a dog that has recovered from parvo develops some immunity, other infectious diseases can still pose a threat. That's why multi-combination vaccines, like those covering four, six or eight diseases, provide comprehensive protection against various infections.

When Are Puppies No Longer Susceptible to Parvo?

Puppies are relatively less prone to parvo after they are at least 45 days old and have received their initial parvovirus vaccine. The risk of parvo infection is highest between 2 to 4 months of age, and mortality is also higher during this period. However, dogs can contract parvo at any age. Therefore, regular vaccination is crucial. Puppies that haven’t been vaccinated against parvo are particularly vulnerable between 2 and 9 months old. To minimize the risk of this dangerous disease, it is recommended that pet owners get their puppies vaccinated as soon as they are old enough.
