Maltese vs. Japanese Tosa: Which Breed is More Expensive?

When comparing the Maltese and the Japanese Tosa, the Maltese generally commands a higher price tag.

Maltese Price Factors

Adult Maltese dogs are typically more expensive than puppies due to their stronger constitutions and ease of care. A purebred Maltese puppy usually costs between $850 and $1400 USD, while an adult can fetch prices of $1400 USD or more. Non-purebred Maltese can range from about $150 to $400 USD. The main factor influencing the price of a Maltese is its coat color, with solid-colored dogs often being the most expensive. Additionally, female Maltese tend to be pricier than males because of their ability to breed and produce litters.

Japanese Tosa Price Factors

The Japanese Tosa is a powerful breed often ranking among the top three most expensive 'fighting' breeds. They are also relatively rare, especially the purebred Japanese Tosa. Tosas are categorized into different fighting levels, such as 'Komusubi,' 'Sekiwake,' 'Ozeki,' and 'Yokozuna,' with the higher the level, the higher the price. While some breeders exist in countries outside of Japan, like China, a Tosa puppy can range from around $400 to $700 USD, but the quality may vary significantly as they are not from their native country. Purebred Tosas from Japan will be significantly more expensive. The price difference mainly depends on the lineage, health, and potential for dogfighting, where higher-level Tosas are considerably pricier.Explore more:Pet Knowledge
