In 2024, several bird species are legally permitted to be kept as pets in China. These include the Budgerigar (also known as the parakeet), Cockatiel, Peach-faced Lovebird, Gouldian Finch, Canary, Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch, and Society Finch.

1. Budgerigar (Parakeet)
Belonging to the parrot family, Budgerigars, also known as Common Pet Parrots or Shell Parrots, are among the most common, popular, and easiest parrots to keep. They are named for their striped markings. These small, colorful birds are known for being quite vocal. While many believe they cannot learn to talk, with proper training, budgerigars can indeed mimic human speech.
2. Cockatiel
Cockatiels, part of the cockatoo family, are small parrots with a distinctive crest. Common varieties include gray, white, pearl, and yellow. Regardless of color, they all have prominent orange patches on their cheeks. They are active birds and enjoy interacting with their owners, although their ability to learn to speak is limited, especially in females.
3. Peach-faced Lovebird
These parrots, also known as Rosy-faced Lovebirds or Peach-faced Parrots, belong to the parrot family. Their original color is almond green with a green head and blue tail feathers, and a deep rose-red forehead. There are now many man-made color variations, with the common "Yellow Peach-faced" being popular.
4. Gouldian Finch
Gouldian Finches belong to the Estrildidae family. Native to Australia, these birds are renowned for their vibrant colors, with numerous man-made color variations. Commonly found varieties in China include the green-bodied with pink chest and yellow head, the green-bodied with pink chest and red head or black head. The black-headed birds are typically females.
5. Canary
Canaries, belonging to the Fringillidae family, are popular cage birds known for their beauty and singing abilities. These originally African birds come in a variety of colors including yellow, white, gray, green, orange-red, bronze, cinnamon, and pied. Their body types and stances also vary with upright, large crescent and upright eagle types being especially prized.
6. Zebra Finch
Zebra Finches are part of the Estrildidae family. Native to Indonesia and Australia, these popular pet birds were introduced to China in the 1950s. They come in original, white, and fawn color variations.
7. Long-tailed Finch
Long-tailed Finches, belonging to the Estrildidae family, are found in Australia and New Zealand. After being domesticated, they became popular cage birds. Their red beak, and the black band on the cheek, throat and upper chest give them the name "Red-billed Munia."
8. Society Finch
Also in the Estrildidae family, wild Society Finches have a rather dull coloration. However, through crossbreeding, they have been cultivated into many different colors, and are often called "Ten Sisters".Don’t miss out on this:Pet Breeding
