Can Domesticated Dogs Contract Rabies? Understanding Transmission

All mammals are susceptible to rabies, making them potential hosts. Therefore, unvaccinated domestic dogs can carry the rabies virus.

Unvaccinated dogs not only carry the risk of harboring the rabies virus but can also develop the disease, potentially leading to death. However, if your dog receives annual rabies vaccinations, avoids contact with stray animals, and is not bitten by other dogs, their risk of contracting rabies is significantly reduced.

Annual rabies vaccinations are essential for protecting both your dog and your family. It’s crucial to be vigilant for potential signs of rabies in your dog. Initially, they may become lethargic and withdrawn, followed by sudden aggression, even attacking people. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, excessive drooling, erratic behavior, and a distorted facial expression. If you observe these symptoms, immediately contact your local disease control center or veterinarian. This helps ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment.

How Rabies is Transmitted

While vaccinated domestic pets are less likely to carry the rabies virus, stray cats and dogs that have not been vaccinated pose a higher risk. The rabies virus is primarily transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. If an infected dog or cat bites a human, the virus can enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body, leading to the onset of the disease. The primary mode of transmission is the exchange of bodily fluids, such as saliva through a bite or scratch, or contamination of open wounds or mucous membranes with saliva of an infected animal. Although less common, the virus may also be contracted through the inhalation of infected aerosols. However, this is often only a concern in environments such as caves inhabited by bats.
