Why Your Devon Rex Isn't Clingy: Understanding and Building a Bond

Devon Rex cats not being clingy can be attributed to several factors, including hot weather, their individual personality, a lack of security, unfamiliarity, strong scents, or forced interactions.

1. Hot Weather: In the summer, cats may avoid close contact because it makes them feel even warmer.

2. Individual Personalities: Some cats are simply not naturally inclined to be clingy. Every cat has a unique personality.

3. Maturity: Kittens tend to be more affectionate, while adult cats may become more independent and less prone to cuddling.

4. Separation Anxiety: If you often leave your cat alone for extended periods, it can develop separation anxiety and lose trust in you, making it less likely to seek affection.

5. Unfamiliarity: Initially, your cat might not be affectionate simply because it doesn’t know you well. You can strengthen your bond by hand-feeding treats and gently petting it.

6. Strong Scents: Cats have a highly developed sense of smell and are very sensitive to odors. If you have strong scents on you, like onions, chili, or menthol, your cat might avoid you.

7. Rough Handling: If you are too rough while interacting with your cat, it might associate interactions with pain, leading to avoidance.

8. Forced Interaction: Forcing a cat to interact when it doesn’t want to can cause negative emotions and make it less likely to seek your company.

How Long Does it Take a Devon Rex to Bond with its Owner?

Generally, a kitten will become familiar with its environment and owner within about one to two months. To help your cat bond with you, offer it tasty meat treats and play with it often. When a new kitten arrives, avoid immediate and direct contact, as this can cause a stress response and hinder the bonding process. Be patient and let it approach you when it feels ready.
