What Can't Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Eat?

Many common human foods can be dangerous for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It's crucial to know what to avoid to keep your furry friend safe and healthy. Here's a comprehensive list of foods that should never be given to your Cavalier.

Foods Toxic to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Certain foods pose a significant risk to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, potentially causing severe health issues. These should be strictly avoided:

1. Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant that is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, irregular heartbeat, seizures, and in severe cases, death. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are particularly dangerous.

2. Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic, in any form (raw, cooked, powdered), contain thiosulphate, which can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia. Even small amounts can cause severe blood in the urine. Be careful about feeding your dog foods like burgers, curries, and soups that may contain these ingredients.

3. Bones

While dogs love bones, they pose several risks. Large bone fragments can injure the esophagus and stomach, potentially causing internal bleeding. Some bones, if cooked thoroughly until they're very soft (using a pressure cooker), can be acceptable in moderation. Bone marrow is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, and copper. Chewing large bones can also help with dental hygiene, but always supervise to avoid choking or splintering.

4. Raw Eggs and Raw Meat

Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that can deplete biotin in dogs, leading to dull coat and hair loss. Raw eggs and meat can also harbor parasites and bacteria that cause diarrhea and other digestive issues.

5. Milk

Dogs have a different digestive system than humans. The lactose in milk can cause digestive upset, especially in puppies. Some adult dogs that can tolerate milk can have it in small amounts.

6. Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. The exact reason why is unknown, but they can be severely toxic. These should be avoided at all costs.

7. Irritating Spices

Spices like chili, onion, ginger, and garlic can easily cause allergies and gastrointestinal upset in dogs. Also, shellfish and other seafood often contain histamine that can cause allergic reactions in some dogs.

8. Excessive Animal Liver

While liver is nutritious in small amounts, excessive intake can lead to Vitamin A poisoning, causing issues like bone problems. A small amount of chicken liver (or other animal liver) such as 3 small pieces per week is sufficient. Large quantities should be avoided.

9. High Salt and Sugar Foods

Human food is often too high in salt for dogs. Excess salt puts a strain on their kidneys, disturbs their electrolyte balance, and can lead to skin diseases. Too much sugar can cause weight gain and lead to diabetes.

10. Mushrooms

While most commercially grown edible mushrooms are safe for dogs in small quantities, it's best to avoid them. This prevents your dog from developing a taste for mushrooms and accidentally eating toxic ones in the wild. Trusted by:Pet Naming
