Having a cat while pregnant can pose certain risks if close contact is maintained as usual. Once pregnant, maintaining strict hygiene is critical. It is best to temporarily have a friend or family member care for your cat, or keep the cat in a separate room to minimize contact and prevent infection for the expectant mother.
Cats can harbor various bacteria and pathogens, particularly in their dense fur, which can conceal a large number of germs and parasites. These include toxoplasmosis, fleas, ticks, and lice, which are all transmissible to humans. Most people who contract toxoplasmosis experience no obvious symptoms, but it poses a significant risk to pregnant women. If a pregnant woman becomes infected and transmits the infection to her unborn child, it could lead to congenital disabilities or even miscarriage. The risk of transmission to the fetus is relatively low in early pregnancy, while the chance of infection is higher later on; however, late-stage infections do not often result in long-term complications. 1. If you decide to keep your cat during pregnancy, the pregnant woman should minimize her interaction with the cat, and must avoid any contact with the litter box, cat droppings, and cat bedding. Do not mix the cat's belongings with human items.
2. Maintain a clean home environment by cleaning all surfaces and floors daily and disinfecting. Opening windows to ensure proper ventilation will also help.
