Typically, a dog's anal glands only need to be expressed about once every three months. When expressing them, apply gentle pressure, gradually increasing it, and repeat several times until the liquid inside is fully expelled.
It's important not to express a dog’s anal glands too frequently; once every three months is usually sufficient. The anal glands are normal structures located around the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions relative to the anus. They play a role in canine scent marking and also help lubricate the feces. If the glands are not emptied regularly, they can become impacted and inflamed, potentially leading to anal gland abscesses or fistulas. Mild cases might be treated with wound cleaning and topical medications, but severe cases could require surgical intervention to clean the area and potentially remove the anal glands. If you notice your dog scooting its bottom along the ground frequently, this could be a sign of anal gland issues and warrants attention.
How to Express Your Dog's Anal Glands
1. Before expressing the glands, prepare paper towels, cotton cloths, gloves, and a mask. An apron can also help prevent your clothes from getting soiled.
2. Gently hold your dog’s tail root with your left hand, lifting the tail to expose the anus. Then, use your right hand to feel for the anal glands, located around the 4 and 8 o'clock positions just below the anus. You should feel two small, raised sacs – these are the anal glands.
3. Gently press and squeeze the anal glands. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as the fluid can spray. The correct method involves squeezing inward and upward, applying gentle but firm pressure and repeating several times.
4. If the glands are difficult to express, try a different technique. Place your index finger and thumb slightly below and behind the glands and gently press upward and outward. The fluid inside should gradually begin to flow out. Continue to express until the anal glands are emptied completely.Free access here:Pet Grooming
