Can a Teddy Bear Dog Heal on Its Own After Being Bitten by a Large Dog? How to Treat It?

It's unlikely that a Teddy Bear dog can heal on its own after being bitten by a large dog. Without proper treatment, the wound could worsen, so it’s best to take your dog to a vet clinic for cleaning and bandaging as soon as possible.

The chance of a Teddy bear dog self-healing after a bite is very small. While the surface wound might appear small, the biting process can tear muscle tissue, creating a cavity between the muscle and skin layers. The larger the cavity, the harder it is to disinfect, as the mouth often contains numerous bacteria. If the cavity is significant and not properly disinfected, it is unlikely to heal on its own. Therefore, it is recommended that you take your dog to a vet to assess the injury and perform cleaning and bandaging of the wound.

How to Treat a Teddy Bear Dog's Wound

When a Teddy bear dog is bitten by a larger dog, the first thing you should do is assess the size and severity of the wound. If there's a large laceration with profuse bleeding, it's best to take your dog to the vet immediately for professional treatment. If the injury appears minor, you can try treating it at home. For minor bleeding, apply pressure using a sterile or clean cloth to stop the blood flow. Once the bleeding has stopped, trim the fur around the wound to expose it. Then, clean the wound thoroughly with saline solution to prevent infection. After cleaning, use a cotton swab to apply iodine to disinfect the wound. Next, cover the entire wound with a layer of pet wound powder and then bandage it using sterile gauze. Remember to put an Elizabethan collar (cone of shame) on your Teddy bear dog to prevent it from licking the wound.Learn more:Pet Grooming
