Labrador Retriever's First Heat: What to Expect and How to Care for Her

Female Labrador Retrievers typically experience their first heat cycle, often referred to as "menstruation" in common terms, between 8 to 12 months of age. Some variations are normal, and this period is accompanied by estrus. They generally have two heat cycles per year, spaced approximately five months apart. During this time, it's important to prioritize hygiene and warmth for your Labrador.

Each estrus cycle in a Labrador is characterized by vaginal bleeding, which is similar to a menstrual period. As a large breed, Labradors typically reach sexual maturity between 6 and 8 months, exhibiting estrus behaviors. While their first heat usually occurs within the 8- to 12-month range, it can sometimes be later, even after a year. A Labrador typically experiences two heat cycles per year, roughly in the spring and fall, with each cycle lasting about 15 days.

Signs of a Labrador in Heat

When a Labrador is in heat, you may notice a decreased appetite, lethargy, and a generally low mood. She might also be more sensitive, restless, and even anxious, pacing or wanting to go outside. Increased interest in male dogs is also typical, as is frequent licking of the vulva, which might appear swollen and have a bloody and mucous discharge.

Caring for Your Labrador During Her Heat Cycle

1. Hygiene

Maintaining excellent hygiene is vital. Keep her bedding clean, washing it frequently. Use a soft mat where she often lies to prevent bacterial infections. Sunbathe her bedding to disinfect it naturally. Consider using dog diapers or sanitary pants to keep her clean and comfortable.

2. Warmth
