Identifying the sex of British Shorthair kittens can be a bit tricky, especially when they're very young. However, there are some reliable methods you can use to distinguish between males and females. One common technique involves gently palpating the kitten's abdomen.

Palpation Method for Kittens Under One Month
For very young kittens, typically under one month old, the palpation method is often the most effective. Gently use your fingers to feel the area between the kitten's hind legs and abdomen. If it's a male kitten, you'll likely feel a small, distinct bump. This is the early formation of the male kitten's undeveloped genitalia. Looking at it from the side, this small protrusion will be more noticeable. As the male kitten grows, this area will eventually develop into the testicles.
Identifying Female Kittens
In contrast, when you gently feel a female kitten's abdomen, the area will be relatively flat. You might even be able to discern the female kitten's vulva in the same general area. As the female kitten gets a bit older, this area will start to resemble an upside-down exclamation point (!), with the vulva and anus in close proximity. This visual difference can help you to further distinguish between male and female British Shorthair kittens.Bonus resource:Pet Knowledge
